This work is a setting of words from John Henry Newman’s sermon “Wisdom and Innocence”. It is a kind of passionate plea for respite from the pressures of daily life and the ultimate hope of peace. To highlight this, the music combines and contrasts rhythmic chanting with lyricism and choral sonority. The juxtaposition of these features of choral singing is used reflect both the passion and tranquility of John Henry Newman’s comforting words.
