Today marks the first day of #PrideMonth 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ While predominately recognised in the US to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots, this month-long festivity of #LGBTQIA+ diversity has been adopted all over the world as a celebration of queer pride and triumph over adversity.
Our #AdelaideFestival2022 show “Watershed: The Death of Dr Duncan” commemorated true events surrounding the drowning of Dr George Ian Ogilvie Duncan in 1972 and subsequent law reform in South Australia.

Happy International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️
Pictured is a moment from our @adelaidefestival production of Watershed: The Death of Dr Duncan where we celebrate the queer rights movement of the 1970s and beyond with the song “Rush of Blood,” an uplifting moment in an show about murder, injustice, corruption and so much more.
#IDAHOBIT2022 comes just one week after we marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Dr George Ian Ogilvie Duncan, so this year’s IDAHOBIT feels particularly poignant.
We remember the past efforts of LGBTQI+ people and allies, including those who championed law reform in the wake of Dr Duncan’s murder, and acknowledge the ongoing work that is required to combat discrimination. We celebrate the many LQBTQI+ artists, leaders and staff members who have made such a significant contribution to the Adelaide Festival over its lifetime.

Today marks 50 years since Dr George Ian Ogalvie Duncan drowned in Adelaide’s Torrens River at the hands of police. His murder remains unsolved like many other hate crimes against #LGBTQ people in Australia and around the world. Despite this, the tragic death of Dr Duncan drew legal and political attention to queer rights, gradually leading to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Australia.
This tragic event, its influence, and those murders that have been forgotten, formed the theme of our opera/oratorio “Watershed” for this year’s @adelaidefestival. I’m honoured that two sections from the work will be performed at a memorial event for Dr Duncan with huge thanks to Jesse Budel, Mark Oates, members of #AdelaideChamberSingers conducted by Christie Anderson.
I wish I could be there for this important event. Wishing all my friends in Adelaide the best as we commemorate his death, to give thanks for all those who have fought so hard for the rights we now enjoy, and the rights for which we continue to fight 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ (at River Torrens)

“Your murderers walk through the world without blame… your murderers sleep through the night without shame… your murderers still to this day are unnamed” – the words of the penultimate chorus in our opera oratorio ‘Watershed The Death of Dr Duncan.’
And I believe the faces of several of these victims were projected on stage as the dates of their murders were read out.
It is time for more of this. We must shine a light on these murders, this hate, this injustice and this homophobia, and no doubt, transphobia as well. (at Brisbane, QLD Australia)
